The sociology of sofas: what your home says about you.
By Caroline Roux
Time was when paint was made by Dulux or Crown. Its content was high in plastic, and it was selected from cards that offered a rather approximate idea of the colour you thought you had chosen. Observing that, due to the hazardousness of the paint card system, most customers played safe with magnolia, Dulux and Crown created many more magnolias – white with a hint of lemon, or apple, or apricot – that sat wanly on walls across Britain for much of the Seventies and Eighties. And then the middle classes discovered Farrow & Ball. Those who aspired to a Georgian villa in Barnsbury could recreate the vibe in a semi in St Albans with the soft chalky finish and deliciously dense colours that Farrow & Ball had been producing since the Forties. Things move on, however. Farrow & Ball paints are now on sale in Homebase and, having gone mainstream, are only a slender symbol of decorating superiority. Decorators turned to Francesca’s Paints for salvation. These are eco emulsions, lime washes and milk paints, including eight types of white, that don’t scream good taste. They say it very, very quietly indeed.

Coast - Living by the sea | June 2008

Coast loves ... the striking pink wall.
Which is influenced by the Mexican architect Luis Barragan, in Wendy Wilbraham's bijou garden. In summer, the area is a suntrap and as the plants dry out, she fills terracotta pots with pebbles, sea glass and shells.

5. Suitable for indoor and outdoor use, this Lime Wash paint - here in Pigi's Piggy Pink - will weather with age and is available in 154 colours. From Francesca's Paints.

Francesca's Paints
Francesca Wezel's shop specialises in Lime Wash, one of the oldest forms of housepaint and one particularly suited to walls with excess moisture. Her paint has been used on historical buildings including The Victoria at Holkham and Burke Hall at Balmoral Castle. Other paints include chalky emulsion, eco emulsion and gloss. There are 178 colours available, inspired by Wezel's travels; despite this hefty carbon footprint, she tries to ensure her paints are as ecologically sound as possible. All colours are mixed on site; Wezel also provides a colour consultation service at customers' homes.

Colour Issue Special - Resedential primaries
"You might feel you'd need a strong constitution to live surrounded by primary colours, but not if you nominated Jamie Parladé to undertake the design. His new house in Carmona, near Seville, is representative of his style - a rich mix of decorative antiques, comfortable furniture and, above all, bold luscious colours. After warming to the blue front door, red beamed ceiling and yellow encaustic tiles. Min Hogg votes him the doyen of Spanish decorators."

Copy Parladé's painted ceiling beams (pages 130 and 132) with Francesca's Paints colours (from top): custom blue (£34.07 per 2.5 litres), 'First Rose of Morn' (£47), 'Louise's Orange' (£34.07) or custom green (£34.07). Ring 020 7228 7694 or visit francescaspaint.com.

'One of the specialists is Francesca Wezel, managing director of her own paint company. Francesca's Paints. She has a remarkable range of 138 colours and offers to mix new ones to order. her external paints are solvent-free Lime Wash, used for centuries across southern Europe and beyond for the outside of houses. She has traveled as far as Chichéc Itzá in Mexico to study the best formulas. It was here that she saw red Lime Wash still standing up to the weather: according to archaeologists, it was painted on the walls 3000 years ago. Francesca says Princess Margaret was not the only royal averse to the smell of paint: prince Charles has used her odorless products at his house on the Balmoral Estate in Scotland.'
